The Ultimate Waxing Guide: How to Prevent Irritation and Ingrowns
Prepare for your appointment and care for your skin afterward with our expert tips for a smooth, bump-free waxing experience.
Pre-Waxing & Post-Waxing Care Guidelines
A successful wax doesn't just depend on the technician—it also depends on how you prepare your skin beforehand and how you care for it afterward. Follow these essential guidelines to minimize discomfort and prevent ingrown hairs.
Pre-Waxing Preparation
- Exfoliate Gently: Lightly exfoliate the area 24-48 hours before your appointment to remove dead skin cells and lift trapped hairs.
- Skip the Lotion: Arrive at your appointment with clean, dry skin. Do not apply heavy lotions or oils on the day of your wax, as they can prevent the wax from gripping the hair.
Post-Waxing Care
- Keep it Cool: Avoid hot baths, saunas, steam rooms, and tanning beds for at least 48 hours. Heat can aggravate freshly waxed, sensitive skin.
- Wear Loose Clothing: Tight clothing creates friction and traps sweat, which can lead to irritation and ingrown hairs. Opt for loose, breathable fabrics.
- Exfoliate and Hydrate: Wait 48-72 hours after your wax, then begin a routine of gentle exfoliation (2-3 times a week) and daily hydration to keep the skin soft and allow new hair to push through easily.
