The Anatomy of a Safe Pedicure: Sanitation Standards to Expect
Your health should never be compromised for beauty. Discover the strict hygiene standards that make a pedicure truly safe.
What Should You Look for in a Safe, Hygienic Pedicure?
A relaxing pedicure can quickly turn into a health risk if proper sanitation protocols are not followed. At Tips To Toes, we believe transparency in our hygiene practices is essential for your peace of mind. Here is what you should always expect from a safe nail spa.
1. Medical-Grade Autoclave Sterilization
Simply washing tools or soaking them in blue liquid (Barbicide) is not enough. All reusable metal implements (clippers, pushers, nippers) must be sterilized in a hospital-grade autoclave. This uses high pressure and steam to kill 100% of all bacteria, viruses, and fungi. Tools should be opened from a sealed sterilization pouch in front of you.
2. Single-Use Porous Tools
Items that cannot be sterilized in an autoclave, such as nail files, buffers, and pumice stones, must be strictly single-use. They should never be shared between clients. At our spa, these items are either given to you to take home or disposed of immediately.
3. Clean Pedicure Bowls and Liners
Pedicure tubs can harbor dangerous bacteria if not cleaned properly. Look for spas that use fresh, disposable plastic liners for every client. Additionally, the tub and jets (if applicable) should be thoroughly disinfected with EPA-registered hospital-grade cleaners between every service.
