How Long Do Different Nail Services Last?

One of the most common questions we get at Tips to Toes is, "How long will my manicure last?" The answer depends entirely on the type of service you choose, your lifestyle, and how well you care for your nails after leaving the salon. Here is a breakdown of what you can expect from different nail services.

    Regular Polish: ~1 Week

Traditional nail polish is a classic for a reason. It's easy to apply, easy to remove, and comes in endless colors. However, it is the least durable option. On average, a regular polish manicure will last about 5 to 7 days before you start seeing chips, especially if you do a lot of typing or wash your hands frequently.

    Gel Polish: ~2 Weeks

If you want a chip-free, glossy finish that lasts longer than regular polish, gel is the way to go. Cured under an LED light, gel polish is instantly dry and highly durable. You can expect a gel manicure to look flawless for about two weeks. After that, your natural nail growth will start to show at the cuticle, and the polish may begin to lift.

    Dip Powder: 3-4 Weeks

Dip powder (SNS) is known for its incredible durability. The process involves applying a base coat and dipping the nail into a colored powder, resulting in a strong, lightweight finish. Dip powder manicures typically last 3 to 4 weeks without chipping or peeling. It's an excellent choice for anyone looking for a long-lasting, low-maintenance option.

Acrylics and Extensions: 2-3 Weeks (Before a Fill)

Whether you choose traditional acrylics, Gel-X, or Builder Gel, extensions require regular maintenance. While the extensions themselves can last for weeks, you will need to visit the salon every 2 to 3 weeks for a "fill" to cover the natural nail growth at the cuticle and rebalance the structure of the nail. With proper maintenance, a set of extensions can last for months.

How to Make Your Manicure Last Longer

    • Wear Gloves: Always wear gloves when doing dishes or cleaning with harsh chemicals.
    • Use Cuticle Oil: Hydrated nails are flexible nails. Apply cuticle oil daily to prevent the polish from chipping and the nails from breaking.
    • Don't Use Your Nails as Tools: Avoid using your nails to open cans, scrape off labels, or pry things open.
